Principal's Report

Dear Families,

Welcome to our last newsletter for Term 3. Our newsletter comes out every week four and nine of each term. It is emailed to our families that are on our email list and is also uploaded to Facebook and available in printed copy at our front office. We also celebrate learning and share news every day on our Facebook Page and reminders on the digital signage on the Brooker Highway.

Uniform Changes - Updated

We have been working with our student leaders this year around some new and warmer uniform items for our students. So far, they have decided upon a new school beanie and a new ¾ zippered jumper both items are now in stock.

Our new school hoodie has been finalised, designed by students and is currently being manufactured and hopefully here within the next week or so.

Our Grade 9 students are currently sorting out their sizing requirements for their 2023 Leavers hoodies which they will get at the beginning of next year ready for them to start grade 10.

Tops

We have pushed uniform with our students this term as we get ready for our new uniform items. Students may wear a non-school hoodie currently under their shell jacket, but this will stop once our school hoodies arrive.

Bottoms

Our pants colour is navy, and we sell school trackpants, leggings and shorts at the front office. However, our students can wear any navy pants that they wish as long as they don’t have overly large logos etc on them.

AEU Stop Work Meetings – Next Wednesday 28/9

Due to planned stop work action on Wednesday 28 September 2022, it has been determined that all schools will be temporarily closed for educational instruction until 10.30am on this day. This action is necessary as we are unable to guarantee adequate duty of care.

Please be assured that normal school arrangements will resume at 10.30am and students may arrive at school at this time on the day of the action. Also note that bus operators will not be adjusting their timetables in response to the later school starting time.

We understand this will be an inconvenience for some families; it is regrettable that school closure action is necessary, however, we must be able to ensure adequate safety and supervision of students. 

If you have concerns that you are unable to reconcile regarding these arrangements, please contact our office as soon as possible.

School Association-Montrose Bay High

Our School Association meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month and usually run for about an hour. However, if you are worried about being roped into fundraising committees or working bees, please don't be.

Our meetings are relaxed, casual and include discussions on various topics such as upcoming events, uniform changes, timetable updates, and more. These meetings are a fantastic way to get an insight into the running of the school and what your child is up to, and we encourage new members to come along. We would love to see some new faces.

I would also like to take the opportunity of thanking Perry Cunningham of Heatwave refrigeration for the donation of a two-door fridge for our breakfast club. I would also like to thank everybody involved, staff, students and other volunteers for making such a successful program.

Grade 7

Grade 8

As Term 3 comes to end an exciting Term 4 is on the horizon. It has been a busy term and the students should be praised for the effort they have put in across all areas of their learning, especially with last week’s PAT testing. We would like to congratulate and thank Mr. Richards and Mr. Edwards for their contribution as UTAS preservice teachers throughout the Term. They have made a great impression amongst our staff and students, and we wish them all the best for the next chapter of their teaching journey.

In the Maths and Science, students have been investigating measurement and exploring different chemical reactions whilst researching the history of the atomic theory.

In Humanities, students have been applying their knowledge of our text: The Ruins of Gorlan by John Flanagan in the creation of a diorama or book trailer. Students have chosen themes that are important to them from our book and are using these to bring scenes from our book to life! We are really impressed by their efforts and eagerly wait the results of their hard work.

Grade 8 Team

Grade 9

Year 9 have had a productive Term 3. We have a continued focus on students’ working hard by remaining in class, keeping electronic devices off and away all day and demonstrating the Montrose Mindset in everything we do. Our key focus areas fall under our school value of Respect, but this term we have changed our particularly focus areas. In Term 3, we will demonstrate our Montrose Mindset by listening and responding appropriately, supporting others to learn and letting others support us and being calm and patient with others. We are also increasing our focus ensuring that all students are in full school uniform at all times. We are working hard with students to support them to be in uniform and providing them with assistance where we can. On the topic of uniform, we have now begun the process of ordering Year 10 hoodies in readiness for next year. Our intention is that students have them for the commencement of the 2023 school year. Order forms and full payment are due to the school office by Friday 21 October.

As has been the case in each of our newsletters articles, we like to provide you with more detailed information showcasing what Year 9 students are doing at school. Our Packages of Learning students have been busy working on several different building and research projects over the past year. All their tasks have been closely connected to the building and construction industry. Their most recent project involved building an earthquake resistant tower. Students analysed how earthquakes affect buildings and then developed innovative solutions to overcome these problems.  Using earthquake simulations, students will then test their tower. PoL students have also constructed full size external wall frames. This required students to first learn how house frames are constructed and then use that knowledge to build their own wall frames.

Grade 10

In core classes, students have been engaged in a range of interesting learning opportunities.  In English, they created speeches to persuade, engage and inform the audience.  They did a great job presenting a range of serious, humorous and often contentious topics.  Chemistry was the focus in Science, with the end of unit assessment underway in all classes.  In Maths, algebra has been a challenge for some, with others taking the opportunity to extend their learning to prepare for level 3 Maths in College.  In Health and Wellbeing, Richard has been visiting from Paraquad Tasmania delivering a great BodySafe education program, including running opportunities in various wheelchair sports including basketball and football.

In addition to class work, transition plans, College enrolments and earning ‘dojo’ points for the Celebration Dinner have been a big part of the second half of Term 3.  Transition plans help young people have a clear pathway towards future goals, leading to more meaningful and relevant subject choices.  All Year 10 students should now have a College enrolment for 2023 with the majority completing an enrolment with Claremont College at MBHS.  Any Year 10's without a College enrolment need to enrol directly with their chosen College or speak to their Connect Teacher as soon as possible.  Excitement is building for the end of Year 10 and most are looking forward to the Celebration dinner to be held on Tuesday 20^th December.  Invitation is by reaching 100 dojo points for meeting school values, over a 10 week period.  Dojo’s are given for being in uniform, being in class on time and prepared to learn and attempting work in class, as well as for other actions that demonstrate school values, such as tidying learning spaces.  Some fantastic students have already achieved the target and are working towards extra incentives, such as getting to choose songs to play during the dinner.

Grade 11 - 12

Year 11/12 – Wrapping up the 2022 School Year

As Term 3 comes to a close our Year 11 students are starting to make plans for Year 12. For some students this will mean continuing to study at MBH while others will be moving onto study at Claremont College or to continue their educational journey through pathways such as Tafe, Traineeships/apprenticeships or full time employment.

The final school day for our Year 11/12 students this year will be Friday the 18^th of November.

Year 11 in 2023

We are currently in the process of confirming our course options for 2023 but will be offering a similar program to this year. Year 10 students who are interested in remaining at MBH for Years 11/12 will have the opportunity to sit down with Danni Bewley (Year 11/12 AST) to discuss their course intentions early  in Term 4.

24 Carrot Gardens

There has been a lot happening in the 24 Carrot Gardens program at Montrose over the course of the year. We have watched the garden change from summer, to autumn, winter and now spring. All Grade 7 and 8 classes have spent SEL lessons doing gardening, and some Grade 9s and 10s have been able to get in on the action too! Much of the produce that we harvest goes into the Loaves and Fishes program.

Year 7 Pizza Day

At the end of Term 2, we had a Year 7 Pizza Day to recognise all the hard work the Year 7s have put into the garden. Most of the ingredients for our winter pizzas came from the garden: tomatoes/passata, garlic, roast pumpkin, broccolini, rosemary and thyme. It was also great to use the pizza oven that the Year 10s made a few years ago.

Year 7 Scarecrow Competition

Earlier this Term, each Year 7 Connect class participated in the Scarecrow Competition in the garden. The winning class was 7E with Material Girl, but the other classes made awesome scarecrows too: Gerald Archer the Family Man, Mr Lillico, Damo the Tradie, Kim Kardashian and Stewie the Buff Scotsman. On the last day of Term 3, 7E will be going to MONA for a tour of their gardens and vineyards as a reward for their win.

National Tree Day 2022

For National Tree Day 2022, 5 classes from Years 7-10 planted 120 plants along the creek. Thank you to Sustainable Timbers Tasmania for the free plants, and thank you to Landcare Tasmania for the discounted biodegradable guards and stakes we got through our school membership with them.  

The plants are understorey plants (shrubs, bushes and grasses that grow under taller trees) which will provide habitat for our wildlife and reduce erosion from all the rain we are getting.  The planting has made the creek area look amazing.  Let's all work together to ensure we maintain and look after the area for us to enjoy.

After School Netball Roster 2022

A fantastic effort from our two school netball teams this year, since round one both teams have improved immensely. Students attended weekly training sessions at school and played games on Tuesday nights supervised by Miss Stacey. 

On Tuesday the 23rd of August both our Grade 7/8 and Grade 9/10 teams played off in their semi-final games with the goal of securing a place in the Grand Final. Our Grade 9/10 team played against Hobart City who had previously beaten them by 33 points. The girls knew it was going to be a tough game and gave it their all. Unfortunately, they ended up losing by 5 points in the end, having said that they should all be extremely proud of their efforts and how much they have improved as a team since the beginning of the roster. It was such a close game and could have gone either way. 

Our Grade 7/8 team managed to comfortably defeat Cosgrove by 18 points and secure themselves a place in the Grand Final. Great team effort, each game they're getting better and better which has been fantastic to see.

The Grade 7/8 Grand Final took place on Tuesday the 30^th of August. The girls knew this game against St Mary's was going to be a challenge. They played fantastic and never gave up despite a few questionable umpire decisions. Unfortunately, our girls were unable to get the win this time. 

A huge thankyou to those parents/carers that came along and supported our teams throughout the roster. The fantastic efforts from our teams this year will hopefully encourage more students to get involved in team sports and sign up for after school netball next year. 

Athlete Development - Basketball Round Robin Day

The Grade 9/10 Athlete Development class travelled to Swisherr on Thursday the 15^th of September to compete in a basketball round robin day against Cosgrove High School and Hobart City High School. It was a fun and competitive day with great leadership and enthusiasm. We had a positive outcome, winning all 8 of our games, both teams winning 4 each. A special thank you to Mr Lillico and Miss Stacey for organising the event.

Reclink Tasmania Mixed Netball Community Series

A number of Grade 9/10 students competed in the Reclink Tasmania Mixed Netball Community Series. The team performed admirably and had fun representing our school.
