Montrose Bay High School Newsletter - Term 3 Week 5
Principal's Report
We have had a very positive start to Term 3 at MBHS, students have settled in well and continue to drive forward to achieve learning goals set out earlier in the year. Students have welcomed new staff to our school and supported them to connect with our community and school life. It is wonderful for our students to have consistent practice across all classes in the second half of the year.
We are delighted to welcome the below teachers to our school this term
Chantel Barnes – Assistant Principal (Year 8) from JRLF
Ella Hansson – Assistant Principal (Year 9) returning from maternity leave
Kate Peacock – Year 11/12
Rodrigo Pontes – 7/8 Maths returning from Taroona High
Daniel Hill – AST (Year 7) from JRLF
Juliet Payne – AST (Year 9) from Kingston High
Martin Beattie – AST (Year 10) from Taroona High
Cam Bailey – HPE from Clarence High
Evidence of Learning
At the end of this Term all students will receive evidence of learning work samples. These work samples will be posted home and will include a piece of work for both English and Maths which will have a rubric attached with “where to next comments” and describe achievement for the sample in the learning area. Teachers are currently collating these pieces of work and adding assessment comments for parents/carers to view.
Garden renovation
Thanks to a partnership with MONA 24CG we have finished our garden renovation project. This project began its design phase with students in 2022 and has now culminated and included student work throughout. As part of the project we have increased garden bed areas, updated paths throughout, construction of a hot house to support production in winter months, compost and recycling station, calming corner + much more. We would like to thank Ryan our garden specialist and the 24CG team for all of their work over the past 2 months.
Student Leadership
Our student leadership team have been extremely busy this term with lots of organisation and event planning happening. Recently the team has been raising money for the Black Dog Institute which has included a free dress day and BBQ where they prepared and cooked egg and bacon rolls. Their next event is a sports colours day where students are encouraged to wear their favourite sporting team colours and participate in various sporting activities across the afternoon. Next week they have also organised a staff v students netball match to continue the ongoing sporting challenge.
Write a book in a day (WABIAD)
I was delighted to attend our annual write a book in a day event yesterday. This event is part of our book week celebrations and was a wonderful opportunity for students to be immersed in the writing, editing and publishing steps of writing a book. We had over 50 students spend the day and evening in our library writing a book from scratch. A big thank you to Hazel Buchorn who supported and organised this event alongside a number of teachers and staff who gave up their time to support students well into the night wrapping up at around 9.00pm.
Mr Tim Nicholas - Principal

Grade 7
Grade 7 students have demonstrated resilience and their ability to accept and manage change as they settled in to Term 3 with the adjusted daily structure, new teaching staff on the grade and a swap to new taster specialist subjects. Congratulations to our Merit certificate winners who have been demonstrating our focus school value of ‘Courage’ in class this term and also to our DoJo raffle winners. We appreciate the examples you set for your peers across many aspects of school life.
It has been a busy start to the second half of the year with various organisations running presentations, workshops and activities, greatly benefitting our students. In week 1, Live Life Whole continued their workshops around physical, mental and emotional wellbeing with the girls, while the boys learned about the age of responsibility in relation to work, education and law with Suzie from Legal Aid and health topics such as nutrition, sleep and mental health with Jake a registered nurse. In weeks 3 and 4, Rob from the Drug Education Network worked with each class to increase their knowledge and awareness around the effects and consequences of various drugs.
Week 4 was National Science Week, with challenges and competitions running each day. Many grade 7 students, who have been working in the school garden each week as part of the 24 Carrot Garden program, came together last Friday and celebrated the significant development and progress in the garden by preparing and cooking pizzas in our outdoor pizza oven, with facilitators from the Material Institute.
Week 5 has been another busy one with Book Week, including daily quizzes and competitions, the 12hr Write a Book in a Day on Wednesday and culminating in Book Week costumes on Friday.
Finally, we would like to wish our grade 7 netballers the best of luck in their grand final on Tuesday!
Congratulations to all grade 7 students who are taking up the multitude of extra-curricular opportunities and making the most of their high school journey. These are the things you will remember in years to come!
Grade 8
We're thrilled to bring you the latest update on the exciting journey our Year 8 students have embarked upon in their diverse range of subjects. From delving into the world of cinematic techniques to mastering the art of orienteering and diving into the depths of data and geography, our students have been embracing a world of knowledge and discovery.
In the English classroom, Year 8 students have been immersing themselves in the captivating world of cinematic techniques. Through the lens of the animated film "Big Hero 6," they've been introduced to the art of visual storytelling. From camera angles that convey emotion to the strategic use of lighting and sound, our students are uncovering the magic that brings narratives to life on the silver screen. As they analyse and discuss these techniques, they're also working on their critical thinking and communication skills.
Our Year 8 students are no strangers to adventure, and in Outdoor Education, they've been navigating their way through the basics of orienteering. The lush expanse of Water Works Reserve has become their classroom, where they've learned to use maps, compasses, and their wits to find their way through the wilderness. This hands-on experience not only teaches them practical outdoor skills but also fosters teamwork and problem-solving.
Unveiling the World of Numbers: Data and Statistics in Maths
Mathematics comes alive for our Year 8 students as they dive into the realm of data and statistics. From analysing real-world data sets to creating their graphs and interpreting trends, our budding mathematicians are gaining insights into how numbers shape the world around us. These skills aren't just confined to the classroom; they're tools that empower them to make informed decisions.
In Geography class, our curious Year 8 students have been exploring the fascinating world of land formations and volcanoes. They're not just memorizing facts; they're delving into the processes that shape our planet's surface. Through interactive lessons, maps, and hands-on activities, they're uncovering the geological forces that have shaped our world and gaining a deeper understanding of Earth's dynamic nature.
Congratulations, Isaac Rakich, Australian History Challenge – 88% High Distinction.
Montrose Reads and the Premiers Reading Challenge where students have been challenged to read 10 books. Well done, to James Timms and Hailie-Jade Jackson.
As we celebrate the diverse achievements of our Year 8 students, we also extend our gratitude to our dedicated teachers for their commitment to nurturing young minds. We encourage you, parents and guardians, to continue supporting your child's educational journey by engaging in conversations about their studies and encouraging their curiosity.
Stay tuned for more updates as our Year 8 students continue to explore, learn, and grow throughout the academic year. Thank you for being an integral part of this enriching journey!
Grade 11 - 12

After School Netball Roster
Grand Final Here We Come! 🏆
After two nail-biting games of netball, it is my pleasure to announce that our Grade 7/8 and Grade 9/10 after-school netball teams have made it to the Grand Final. You should all be so proud of yourselves.
In the semi-finals, the Grade 7/8 team finished strong with a 21-5 win over HCHS. Miss Stacey, Mr Ross, and all of our wonderful supporters were on the edge of their seats during the 9/10 game. A technical issue resulted in an 18 minute last quarter. It was an extremely physical game from all. Our students kept their cool and got the win over Tasman High with a final score of 24-23. Amazing effort from all. Bring on the Grand Final, Tuesday 29th August at 4pm😊
